Regardless of if you’ve lived in the Tri-Cities all of your life of your just passing through you’re bound to need an escape. While Johnson City, Bristol, Kingsport, and all the areas in between provide some awesome activities sometimes you just need to get away and recharge your batteries. I’ve selected 3 of my favorite locations to get away to and enjoy the day! These locations feature beautiful views, tantalizing food, and quaint towns chocked full of history.

1.) Asheville, NC

Approximately one hour from Johnson City, Asheville, North Carolina came into being in 1784 and is home to the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway and a very exquisite part of history, the Biltmore Estate. Asheville is known for its exquisite cuisine and the numerous breweries that line its streets, it is often referred to as Beer Town USA. The atmosphere of Asheville is all about being local and sustaining a green environment. Asheville has received numerous accolades, including being in the Top 9 Most Romantic Cities of the South and One of America’s Best River Towns. Asheville has enough to keep you busy from sunrise to sunset. If you decided to make it an overnight trip I suggest staying at The Grove Park Inn, you most definitely will not regret it.

2.) Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN

Know for Dolly Parton’s Dollywood, the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area has grown immensely over the past 10 years. With millions coming to visit the stately cabins perched on the ridges of the Great Smokey Mountains. On a trip here you’ll have excellent shopping opinions at the outlet malls, numerous choices of theaters some featuring dinners along with the show that will leave you craving for more, along with numerous other fun and adventurous activities from bungee jumping to visiting the aquarium. This area is also known for its wonderful Christmas light displays from late November to early January.

3.) Abingdon, VA

From being the home of the famous Virginia Creeper Trail to holding one of the last year-round professional resident theaters remaining in the United States. Abingdon holds a unique key to the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia as home to several past Congressmen and Governors of various states throughout America. Abingdon provides a slew of things to do on your day trip from delectable food, amazingly historic museums, and wonderful shops. If you find yourself there overnight, the Martha Washington Inn is worth every dime.
